GOP Looks to Gain Control of KY House

From WEKU.com:

Democrats currently outnumber Republicans 65-35 in the Kentucky House, but Republicans are hoping that will change November 2nd and voters will give them control. If they do, House Republican Leader Jeffrey Hoover is promising open and honest government.

“It’s time for new leadership that will make government fiscally responsible – a government that works under the saying of government of, for and by the people,”said Hoover.

House Republicans are pre-filing legislation requiring lawmakers to forfeit their pay if a special session is needed because of failure to approve a budget. Another measure would require any bill that raises taxes or spends tax dollars to be made available to the public and lawmakers at least 48 hours before a vote.

KY: Senate President David Williams for Governor?

From Courier-Journal:

Some leading Republicans are promoting the idea that two of the party’s possible gubernatorial candidates next year — Senate President David Williams and Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer — should team up as a slate for governor and lieutenant governor with Williams in the top spot.

“Richie running with David is really the only credible talk that I’m hearing lately,” said Ellen Williams, a former chairwoman of the state Republican Party. “I think that would be a formidable ticket and one that Kentuckians would be excited about.”

Larry Forgy, the GOP’s 1995 candidate for governor, said a Williams-Farmer ticket would be the best the party could field.

KY: Column – Democrats’ Disunity Risky in Long Run

From Courier-Journal:

But a chain of events that began the day after the election has Conway scrambling to bring into his tent Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo, who lost the primary by 4,174 votes, 0.8 percent of the total, and said last week that he might not endorse Conway.

The margin was small enough to prompt an automatic recanvass in many states, and Mongiardo said the morning after the primary that he would ask for one. Conway’s camp said that would complicate its efforts to start fund-raising for the general election, so a deal was struck: Mongiardo forsook the recanvass in return for Conway’s pledge to help raise $70,000 for Mongiardo’s campaign, according to advisers in both camps. The agreement did not call for Mongiardo to endorse Conway, but was the beginning of a process that would naturally lead to an endorsement.

KY: More Charges for AG Conway Ethics Complaint

From LegalNewsLine.com:

Kentucky Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo is planning to add more charges to the ethics complaint he recently filed against state Attorney General Jack Conway, his opponent in the race for a U.S. Senate seat.

Mongiardo has already alleged that Conway has “violated the public trust” by accepting more than $70,000 in campaign contributions from utility companies, their executives and lobbyists while approving rate hikes.

Kim Geveden, the campaign spokesperson for Mongiardo, said Friday that Mongiardo will soon be amending the complaint.

Geveden said he will be adding “new discoveries that raise even more questions regarding Conway’s conduct as attorney general.”

KY: Democrat Lt. Governor Leads Democrat Attorney General in Senate Primary

From WSJ.com:

It’s a tighter race for Democrats. Mongiardo leads Attorney General Jack Conway by a seven-point, 39%-32%, margin. It falls within the polls 4.5% margin of error and with 17% still undecided, Ali said it’s too soon to write Conway off. “I wouldn’t say it’s a lock by any stretch, but I would rather be in Mongiardo’s situation than Conway’s,” Ali said.

KY: Democrat Files Ethics Complaint Against AG Conway

From WHAS11.com:

Allegations in Kentucky’s U.S. Senate Democratic primary are now in the hands of the Executive Branch Ethics Commission.

Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo filed an official complaint against Attorney General Jack Conway today, saying Conway should not accept campaign contributions from utility company executives or lobbyists because the Attorney General’s office is involved in negotiating rate increases.

Meanwhile, during a candidate forum last night, Conway revealed he will seek to dismiss LG&E and Kentucky Utilities $220 million rate increase request. Mongiardo says Conway is taking action now because he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Reagan Republicans Square off in Kentucky

From Courier-Journal:

The May primary election will be a first for Mark Slaughter, candidate in the Republican primary for Bullitt County’s 49th District House seat.

His challenger, Russell Webber, has been a candidate three times, once coming within 36 votes of victory.

Slaughter is funding his campaign with $780 of his money, while Webber has raised $4,758, mostly by reaching out to residents who have given to conservative Republicans in the past, he said.

And that’s where a lot of the men’s differences end.

Both have taken a grassroots approach to campaigning, sticking to door-to-door introductions, and in Slaughter’s case, Facebook and web pages to gain support.

Kentucky Attorney General has Horse in Derby

From the Washington Post:

For most thoroughbred owners, Conway said, an entry in the Kentucky Derby is the “thrill of a lifetime,” regardless of the horse’s finish.

But May could be an exciting month for the Conway family for another reason. In two weeks, Kentuckians will head to the polls to vote in the state’s U.S. Senate Democratic primary and then it will be Jack Conway’s turn to race.

Conway, a George Washington University Law School graduate, is running to be the Democratic candidate in the November election to replace retiring Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.). While Stately Victor is considered an outlier in his race — early odds place him at 30 to 1 — Conway is a rising political power in the Democratic party who has achieved success as attorney general.
