Georgia: State Senator Announces Run for Attorney General

From RN-T.com:

State Sen. Preston Smith (R-Rome) has qualified to run as a Republican for state attorney general, he announced today.

He released the following statement:

Over the past few weeks I have been encouraged by Georgia’s grassroots conservatives to consider taking our fight to a higher level. From Waycross to Dalton and Bainbridge to Blairsville, I have heard from fellow Georgians who are fearful of the encroachment of government, the loss of liberties, and rising taxes in a time when family budgets are shrinking.

Georgia Secretary of State asks AG to Sue Feds

From AJC.com:

Kemp on Tuesday sent Baker a letter asking him to appoint counsel to sue the Justice Department in the U.S. District Court in Washington. The department has blocked Kemp, and former Secretary of State Karen Handel before him, from permanently implementing a system Handel designed to check the citizenship of Georgians when they register to vote.

Baker spokesman Russ Willard said the attorney general is still considering Kemp’s request but believes the administrative route of seeking pre-clearance will save both time and money. Kemp said the Justice Department, led by Democratic President Barack Obama, is playing politics to deny a Republican initiative.

Handel had unilaterally implemented the program prior to the 2008 elections in response to enactment in Congress of the federal Help America Vote Act. But the Justice Department under former President George W. Bush found that Handel should have gotten pre-clearance from the Justice Department under the requirements of the federal Voting Rights Act. A federal judge later ordered Handel to seek pre-clearance.

GA: Lawmakers Step Up Health Care Fight

From The Cherokee Tribune:

A local representative’s resolution that would prevent Georgia residents from being forced to buy health insurance will come back for another vote.

State Rep. Calvin Hill (R-Hickory Flat) has proposed an amendment that would prohibit any government from forcing an individual to participate in a health care system and allows that individual to pay directly for health care services.

The resolution received a majority earlier this week, but not the two-thirds majority necessary for an amendment. The House voted to reconsider the resolution Wednesday and it is scheduled to be heard again today.

Georgia Legislators to Fight Federal Health Care Reform

From The Augusta Chronicle:

Georgia lawmakers are headed for their own fight today over federal health-reform legislation that Congress passed Sunday night.

The House votes today on an amendment to the state constitution that would attempt to relieve Georgians from having to comply with the federal mandates to purchase coverage. Some critics say the amendment would be superceded by the federal law.

The author of the measure, state Rep. Calvin Hill, said Congress has tried to ram its will over the wishes of the General Assembly.

“This is the ultimate insult to our Legislature, he said.

GA: State Senator Pulls out of race for Congress

From ajc.com:

“Being a congressman has been something I thought I wanted to do. Needless to say, when John Linder announced that he was not running for re-election, I jumped at the opportunity to be the new voice of leadership. However, for the past three weeks, I have not been at peace about this decision. I feel this is an appropriate time to let all my supporters know that I will also not be seeking reelection for the 9th district senate seat.”

“You will be served well by whoever wins both the Senate seat from the 9th district and Congressional seat from the 7th district.”

“I want to offer my heart felt appreciation to all those who have supported me over the years.”

Georgia Senate Defiant on Health Care Reform

From TimesFreePress:

Under health care reform being pushed through Congress, “People who cannot already afford to purchase health care will be forced to purchase it or will be punished,” said Sen. Judson Hill, R-Marietta, one of the bill’s sponsors. “States have a right to provide further protection for citizens.”

There’s also a financial cost to the states if federal health care reform is passed. The Georgia Senate Budget Office estimates that expanded Medicaid coverage required under the current health care reform bill would cost Georgia an additional $1 billion per year.

Senate Bill 317 states that federal health care coverage will not be mandatory for Georgia residents and that those who prefer to purchase other health insurance, or none, won’t face penalties.

GA: State Senator Don Balfour Running for Congress

From GwinnettDailyPost.com:

State Sen. Don Balfour, R-Snellville, Monday was the first to jump into the race for Congress, after U.S. Rep. John Linder’s surprise retirement announcement this weekend.

About a half dozen other politicians have said they are considering campaigns, including Commissioner Mike Beaudreau, Sen. David Shafer, Reps. Clay Cox, R-Lilburn, and Jeff May, R-Monroe and Gwinnett GOP Chairman Chuck Efstration.

Balfour, who is the chairman of the powerful Senate Rules Committee and heads the National Conference of State Legislatures, is a formidable competitor to become Linder’s replacement after 18 years in office. The Waffle House executive, like Linder, was first elected to his current position in 1992 and is the longest serving Republican senator in the state.

Husband-Wife Ticket in Georgia

From ajc.com:

Carol Porter will seek the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor, joining her husband, DuBose Porter, as a potential husband and wife team at the top of the party’s ticket.

Carol Porter, who announced her intention at a Capitol news conference with her husband and their boys at her side, becomes the first Democrat to announce for lieutenant governor. Incumbent Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle is seeking re-election on the Republican side.

DuBose Porter, the House minority leader, is one of five Democrats seeking the gubernatorial nomination. Should they both become Democratic nominees, it sets up a potentially historic one-two punch. But Carol Porter said it’s not a gimmick aimed at boosting her husband’s campaign.
