Georgia Legislators to Fight Federal Health Care Reform

Georgia lawmakers are headed for their own fight today over federal health-reform legislation that Congress passed Sunday night.

The House votes today on an amendment to the state constitution that would attempt to relieve Georgians from having to comply with the federal mandates to purchase coverage. Some critics say the amendment would be superceded by the federal law.

The author of the measure, state Rep. Calvin Hill, said Congress has tried to ram its will over the wishes of the General Assembly.

“This is the ultimate insult to our Legislature, he said.
