Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey cast the deciding vote Wednesday as a Senate committee approved his latest plan for changing state law on selecting top judges.
House leaders, however, are voicing support for a rival bill with more limited changes to the present system.
Although Ramsey had outlined most of the new plan weeks ago, one provision came as a surprise: State Supreme Court justices would be forced into contested elections, starting next year with Justice Sharon Lee, recently appointed to fill a vacancy.
