WI: Voting Issues in ’04 Could Continue

There are some very simple steps to stop election fraud. Or put another way, without a voter identification requirement, it’s very easy to claim to be someone else. Those who stand to benefit from this type of shadowy activity tend to be the ones who will fight the hardest to keep it legal.

MILWAUKEE — Widespread voting problems in Milwaukee marred the 2004 election and could affect future contests like the November presidential election, according to a new report.The city’s election commission failed to combat voting irregularities after being hamstrung by state laws and inadequate training of poll workers, according to the 67-page report by the Milwaukee Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit.
The problems included ineligible voters casting ballots, felons working and voting at the polls, a failure to keep up with the transient habits of college students and homeless voters and abysmal record keeping.

The report focused on examples of known problems and didn’t give a number of how many votes may have been fraudulently cast.

But Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen called it “extraordinarily troublesome.”
