Missouri Republicans Denounce Health care Proposal

Missouri’s Republican-led House is urging the state’s congressional delegation to vote against a federal health care overhaul.

House members voted 111-46 Tuesday on a resolution encouraging Missouri’s delegation to vote against the health care measure being considered in Washington.

Republicans decried the federal legislation as too big, too expensive, too intrusive in people’s lives and too full of special deals for certain states.

Democratic House leaders accused Republicans of putting on a political show. Still, some Democrats joined them in voting for the measure.

MI: Special Election set Months Away

But some Republicans say political strategy is the main reason for the November election. Most political experts maintain Republicans do better in non-general elections because they turn out in greater numbers than Democrats.

“A year is too long to have a district go without state representation,” said Rep. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge. “We have airmen, soldiers who died for our right to be represented.”

The winner of the November election will serve the last eight weeks of Simpson’s remaining term and then begin a new term in 2011.

Missouri GOP Unites Against Tax Increases

Missouri Republicans have renewed their pledge not to increase taxes.

Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and GOP legislative leaders said Wednesday they would oppose any tax increase that is proposed. They also promised to promote economic development.

Several House members say they plan to endorse legislation objecting to federal health care reform.
