MI: Lt. Governor Speculation Begins

From the Michigan Messenger:

Former Congressional candidate and well known conservative activist Jack Hoogendyk Thursday sent out an email newsletter looking at three possible Republican Lt. Gov candidates in the upcoming GOP nominating convention.

While the top of the ticket has been decided for the party, won by Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder, posts such as Secretary of State, Attorney General and Lt. Governor are still up for grabs and will be decided by a vote of the delegates at the end of the month.

Traditionally, the Lt. Governor choice has been left to the convention, though the governor candidate’s option tends to carry the weight in pushing the delegates to choice.

But Snyder has not mentioned who his Lt. Gov. choice will be, leaving a void where pundits and activist are able to do some political guess work, and advocacy, of their own.

MI: Battle for Republican AG nod heats up

From lsj.com:

Former Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Bill Schuette and state Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop have the next two weeks to sway party faithful in their campaigns for the Republican nomination for Michigan attorney general.

Schuette has the endorsement of GOP gubernatorial nominee Rick Snyder and the backing of a large number of party activists on his side, but there’s no guarantee how delegates will vote at the party’s Aug. 28 convention.

Both Schuette and Bishop are crisscrossing the state in a final push before a pick is made and the winner launches his two-month-long general election campaign.

“Going into the convention, Schuette is the guy to beat,” said William Rustem of Public Sector Consultants, a nonpartisan Lansing think tank. “He’s done a significant job in reaching out across the state.”

MI: Democrats Cybersquat in AG Race

From wlns.com:

For years, Bill Schuette (SHOO’-tee) has used the slogan “Schuette on Duty” to campaign for Congress, the state Senate, the Michigan Court of Appeals, and attorney general.

Now, the Midland Republican has lost the website http://www.schuetteonduty.com to the Michigan Democratic Party, which also bought right to use the name with other extensions. Democrats plan to use the site to criticize Schuette.

Schuette campaign manager Rusty Hills brushes off the move, saying he’s sure voters will find Schuette’s official site http://www.billschuette.com.

MI: Secretary of State Candidate Wants to Ask about Organ Donation

From AnnArbor.com:

The issue of whether Secretary of State employees follow a “just ask” policy has been a point of frustration among organ transplant advocates in the state who say the extra step of asking makes a difference. They say Michigan has a lower rate of drivers on the organ donor registry because there’s no policy to explicitly ask them if they would like to be a donor.

Gift of Life Michigan has been among groups lobbying for a Michigan law that would require the state to explicitly ask drivers at Secretary of State offices whether they want to be on the state’s donor registry.

About 30 other states require the “just ask” policy.

MI: Democrats and Republicans Look Ahead to November

From the Daily Tribune:

Some of last week’s primary races in both parties had nearly as many candidates as there were suitors on “The Bachelorette.”

But voters should find the next election ballot slightly less confusing now that the Republicans and Democrats have picked their nominees for the Nov. 2 general election.

The primary was an election with a lot of seats with no incumbents, and a few incumbents with several challengers.

Republicans and Democrats are turning their attention to state conventions at the end of the month and who their candidates for governor will want for lieutenant governor, secretary of state and attorney general.

MI: Looking for that edge

Cross posted on REDistrictingMAjorityProject.com:

From the Detroit News

Earlier this month, Republican strategists committed to raising $40 million to sink into state legislative races around the country — including Michigan — in hopes of gaining majorities that will allow the GOP to redraw districts to their advantage.

Speaking at a roundtable for journalists earlier this month, Tom Reynolds, former chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee and a former U.S. representative from New York, said Michigan was a “perfect example” of a state the GOP would like to target.

The GOP holds control of the state Senate, but will also be looking to take some of the 24 seats in the House occupied by Democrats that are being vacated or held by incumbents. The Republicans would need 13 of those seats to gain a House majority; if the party was to also take the governorship, it would be assured control of the redistricting process for 2012.

Election Day in Michigan, Kansas, Missouri

From the WashingtonExaminer:

Voters in three states will participate in primaries today. In Michigan, the open governorship hangs in the balance, and in Kansas, Republican Sen. Sam Brownback has left his seat open to run for (really, to become) governor.

For Michigan governor, the GOP race is considered a three-way toss-up between Attorney General Mike Cox, Rep. Pete Hoekstra and businessman Rick Snyder, with Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard in the running as well. The geography favors Hoekstra — he hails from the western part of the state, where two House primaries (one is to replace Hoekstra) will help get out the vote. The other three Republican candidates are all from the eastern part of the state. The governor’s race, in which Republicans are favored, has national significance. It will be key to both congressional and state legislative redistricting after the 2010 election.

During a poll of Republican voters on the gubernatorial race by the Glengariff Group, respondents were also asked which candidates they support in the races for Attorney General and Secretary of State. State Sen. Michelle McManus leads the Secretary of State race with 9.4 percent, with state Sen. Cameron Brown at 7.6 percent, Rep. Paul Scott at 5.2 percent, Oakland County Clerk Ruth Johnson at 4.4 percent and Calhoun County Clerk Anne Norlander at 2.2 percent.

MI: Poll shows 3 GOP Hopefuls Tied Up

From Freep.com:

A new independent poll of likely Republican primary voters released Tuesday finds Attorney General Mike Cox, U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra and Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder in a three-way tie for the lead, with Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard well back and state Sen. Tom George out of contention.

Bouchard’s campaign manager responded to the poll conducted by Mitchell Research & Communications of East Lansing by firing off a memo to supporters in which he claimed the campaign’s most recent internal poll showed Bouchard and Hoekstra tied for the lead.

Cox, Hoekstra and Snyder garnered 18% each in the Mitchell poll, with Bouchard at 9% and George at 1%. Thirty-four percent were undecided in the poll of 895 GOP voters conducted July 1-6. The poll’s margin of error was 3.25 percentage points.

MI: AG Mike Cox to file brief Supporting Arizona Immigration Law

From freep.com:

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox plans to file a legal brief supporting Arizona’s immigration law and sent a letter today asking other state attorneys general to join him.

Cox, one of five Republicans running for Michigan governor, said in the letter that the U.S. Justice Department’s legal challenge to the Arizona law “seeks to remove the power of the states” to enforce their own immigration statutes along with federal immigration laws.

He also argues that under the federal government’s approach, “there is no cooperative effort on immigration but only a one-way street where states lose control over their borders and are left to guess at the reality of the law.”

He’s asking for replies by Tuesday afternoon.
