IN: AG Vows to get Tough on Public Corruption

Public officials and government employees who steal public money had better sleep with one eye open this year.

That’s the message from Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller who told The Times he plans to aggressively pursue corrupt government workers.

“I don’t care if they have a gambling problem or their spouse has some problem, there’s no excuse,” Zoeller said. “These are public institutions, and these people have higher responsibilities.”

Even with just one year as attorney general under his belt, Zoeller has experience going after corrupt government officials.

Investigating a recession-fueled spike in complaints about consumer fraud, identity theft and foreclosure-rescue scams while combating public corruption have been top priorities for Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller during his first 12 months in office.

In his second year as Indiana’s top consumer advocate, Zoeller plans an even more vigorous outreach to Hoosier consumers to help them protect themselves against scams and frauds. Zoeller’s office will focus new attention on stopping fraud against Medicaid and other thefts of public funds. As the lawyer for state government, Zoeller plans to continue to build on his working relationship with criminal-justice system professionals to better protect Hoosiers from being victimized and to uphold convictions.

IN: GOP Secretary of State Weighs Senate Run

Only days after one high-profile Republican decided against challenging Sen. Evan Bayh, a second is weighing a run.

Secretary of State Todd Rokita, whose second and final term is up this year, said in an e-mailed statement that he is being encouraged to consider running for Senate by “a diverse group of people.”

“I certainly share Hoosiers’ concerns that we need real leadership in Washington — leadership that we simply aren’t getting today,” Rokita said.

He said he and his wife “still think and pray about how we can best serve Indiana in the future.”

Indiana Attorney General to probe Cornhusker Kickback

At the request of State Sen. Jim Buck and other Indiana elected officials, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller is reviewing the constitutionality of the federal health-care bill passed recently by the U.S. Senate.

“I appreciate the Attorney General for being proactive and utilizing the authority given to him by Indiana law to examine the impact this federal legislation will have on our state,” Buck said. “Because of his initiative Indiana will be better prepared in the battle ahead.”

In December, Buck called upon the state’s top lawyer to probe the constitutionality of a “sweetheart political deal” made for Nebraska in order to help pass a federal health-care bill through Congress. The last-minute addition to the U.S. Senate version permanently exempts Nebraska from paying Medicaid costs that Indiana and all other states must pay under the proposal.
