AR: Secretary of State Candidates Seasoned Public Servants

From Arkansas News:

Three Democrats with years of public service experience are vying for the party’s nomination to replace Charlie Daniels as caretaker of Arkansas’ seat of government.

In addition to maintaining the state Capitol and grounds, assisting counties with elections and serving as custodian of many state records, the Arkansas secretary of state serves with the governor and attorney general on a board that redraws legislative districts after each national census. The new officeholder will participate in redistricting next year.

The term-limited Daniels is moving on to the state auditor’s office — he did not draw an opponent of either party — after eight years as secretary of state.

AR: Two Republicans and a Democrat Seek Lt. Governor Job

From Arkansas News:

Republican lieutenant governor candidate Mark Darr went on the offensive last week, criticizing state Sen. Shane Broadway, the only Democratic candidate for the office, for apparently lacking enough business experience for the job.

Darr’s attack on Broadway may not seem that unusual this close to the May 18 primary election, but it appeared a bit premature considering Darr, of Rogers, faces a GOP primary challenge from Donnie Copeland of Sherwood.

Arkansas Lawmakers Want AG’s Opinion on Health Care Bill

From Arkansas News:

More than two dozen Republican state legislators asked state Attorney General Dustin McDaniel today for an opinion on whether the new federal health care reform law is constitutional.

The request came after President Obama signed into law the landmark legislation that the U.S. House passed Sunday.

“We want to know what can we do,” said Rep. John Burris, R-Harrison, who sought the opinion in a letter to McDaniel. “It has passed on the federal level. What are the state’s options? What does the state need to do to prepare for what’s about to come down?”

Among the two dozen other lawmakers whose names appeared on Burris’ letter were three running for Congress — Sens. Gilbert Baker of Conway and Kim Hendren of Gravette, both candidates for the U.S. Senate, and Sen. Cecile Bledsoe of Rogers, who is running for the 3rd District seat in the U.S. House.

AR: Lawmakers Reject Cuts to Lt. Governor’s Budget

From KATV.com:

Arkansas lawmakers have rejected a hefty cut to Lt. Gov. Bill Halter’s budget that would have laid off all but one of his staffers.
