Poll – PA Backs AZ Immigration Law

Pennsylvanians by a 2-1 margin favor Arizona’s immigration law, reflecting sentiment in national polls, an official with Quinnipiac University’s polling institute said today.
By a 52 percent to 27 percent margin, Pennsylvanians approve of the law that may prompt protests tonight at the Major League Baseball All-Star game in Anaheim, Calif., says a Quinnipiac poll of 1,367 Pennsylvanians. The poll’s margin of error was plus or minus 2.7 percent.
Some Latinos object to holding the 2011 game in Arizona.
The law, which takes effect this month, requires police to ask about a person’s immigration status when stopped on a reasonable suspicion of being in the country illegally.

Arizona GOP Primary is Decisive Election

The results of a half-dozen Republican primary races will be pivotal for the future of the Arizona state Senate.
Those races pit archconservative candidates, who often delve into legislation on social issues, against more moderate conservatives who prefer to focus on core government functions like budgeting and education.
Republicans are expected to easily retain their majority in both houses, if not widen it. So, the decisive election will be the Aug. 24 primary.
The results of those few Republican primaries will help determine if the Senate takes an even more conservative tone or becomes more moderate than it has been in the past two years. That would have an impact on a number of key issues, including budget matters, education, economic development and immigration.

Arizona Democrat AG Hopefuls Debate

Democratic candidates for attorney general had their most pointed debate to date Wednesday night, with each claiming to have the most relevant experience for the job.
The debate, which was televised on Channel 8 (KAET), involved David Lujan, Vince Rabago and Felecia Rotellini.
Lujan, the state House minority leader, said his experience as a lawmaker makes him uniquely qualified to work with the Legislature on issues affecting the Attorney General’s Office.
“That’s what makes me the most qualified candidate,” said Lujan, an attorney for a firm that provides legal services to child victims of abuse and domestic violence.

AZ: Dem AG Candidates Would Support Migrant Law

The three Democrats running for Arizona attorney general said they would enforce the state’s new immigration law if it is not struck down by court challenges.
David Lujan, Felecia Rotellini and Vince Rabago separately said they do not support the new law and think it won’t stand up to court scrutiny, contending it oversteps state authority by enforcing what is a federal law. But all three said they would enforce it if it is deemed constitutional when the courts weigh in.
The three discussed immigration and other state issues at a Saguaro Eastside Democrats debate Monday night. All three have been assistant attorneys general in Arizona.
Lujan stayed out of the fray as Rotellini and Rabago took shots at each other regarding the payday-lending industry. The law that allows short-term, high-interest loans is scheduled to expire on July 1, but the candidates talked about the changes those in the industry may make to keep operating after the deadline.

AZ: Governor Suspends AG for not wanting to enforce Immigration Law

Terry Goddard, Arizona’s Democratic attorney general, will be Republican Gov. Jan Brewer’s likely opponent in the November mid-term elections. He also happens to be the guy who is charged with defending Arizona’s state laws. Goddard isn’t too keen on defending Arizona’s sparkly new immigration regulations.
So Brewer suspended him from performing any work related to the law. That’s right — she just ordered him to stop. Here’s her statement:

Arizona Democrat AG Trails in Latest Governor Poll

After championing her state’s new immigration law in the face of criticism from President Obama and others, incumbent Arizona Governor Jan Brewer for the first time now attracts more than 50% support in her bid for reelection against likely Democratic candidate Terry Goddard.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in Arizona shows Brewer with 52% of the vote and Goddard, who opposes the immigration law, with 39%. Seven percent (7%) prefer another candidate, while just three percent (3%) are undecided.
Arizona voters now support the new immigration law more than ever, with 71% who favor it versus just 24% who are opposed.
Brewer captures 69% of the votes of those who favor the law. Goddard, the state’s attorney general, earns 91% support from those who oppose it.

Arizona AG against Immigration Bill

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard says he opposes an immigration enforcement bill passed by the Legislature and hopes Gov. Jan Brewer vetoes it.
Goddard said Tuesday that the bill “does nothing to improve border security or address the core issues of illegal immigration.” He also said it would “take law enforcement resources away from stopping more serious crimes.”
Goddard released a letter urging President Barack Obama to step up enforcement and seeking stricter federal laws against first-time illegal immigrants.

Arizona Lawmakers Pass Immigration Bill

Arizona lawmakers on Tuesday passed one of the toughest pieces of immigration-enforcement legislation in the country, which would make it a violation of state law to be in the U.S. without proper documentation.
It would also grant police the power to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being illegal.
The bill could still face a veto from Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer. A spokesman for Ms. Brewer said she has not publicly commented on the bill. Ms. Brewer, a Republican, has argued for stringent immigration laws.
Under the measure, passed Tuesday by Arizona’s lower house, after being passed earlier by the state Senate, foreign nationals are required to carry proof of legal residency.
