Updated: RSLC Election Day Memo
Last Updated on Monday, 8 November 2010 02:05 Written by rslcpol Monday, 8 November 2010 02:05
From RSLC.com:
In comparison to past elections, all indications are that Republicans had more success than either party has seen in modern history. As of 8:30 a.m. ET, Republicans had gained more than 500 state legislative seats nationwide, outperforming the 472-seat Republican gains of 1994 and the 322-seat Democratic gains of 2006. Before yesterday’s elections, Democrats controlled 60 of the country’s state legislative chambers, Republicans 36. After yesterday’s elections, at this point, Democrats control 40 chambers, Republicans 55 and two evenly divided (the Oregon House and the Alaska Senate). .
[Note: In the New York Senate, Republicans made significant gains and are awaiting results in several races that could lead to majority status.]
FL: The Story Behind Republican Bondi’s Rise to Attorney General
Last Updated on Monday, 8 November 2010 01:46 Written by rslcpol Monday, 8 November 2010 01:46
From Tampabay.com:
Pam Bondi had no political base and no political ambitions.
Yet, in less than a year, the longtime prosecutor beat out a sitting lieutenant governor and two seasoned politicians for the job of Florida attorney general.
“It’s a phenomenal feat when you look at the whole playing field,” said her former boss, Hillsborough State Attorney Mark Ober.
She won with timing and hard work, by choosing possibility over comfort. The victory will take Bondi from a job supervising no one to the helm of an office that employs more than 1,200 people.

Republican Steve Cooley Adds to Lead in California Attorney General Race
Last Updated on Monday, 8 November 2010 01:09 Written by rslcpol Monday, 8 November 2010 01:09
From the L.A. Times:
Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley widened his lead in the race for California attorney general, and now leads his Democratic rival, San Francisco Dist. Atty. Kamala Harris, by 26,455 votes, according to the latest statewide figures.
As of 4 p.m. Sunday, the total vote reported by the state’s 58 counties was 3,674,137 for Cooley and 3,647,682 for Harris.
Those figures differ from those reported by the secretary of state, whose website has lagged behind on reports from a number of counties.
The lead in the attorney general’s race has see-sawed between the two candidates since election night, and with considerably more than 1 million ballots remaining to count, could easily reverse again.

RSLC Chairman Ed Gillespie – Hero of the 2010 Elections
Last Updated on Friday, 5 November 2010 09:04 Written by rslcpol Friday, 5 November 2010 09:04
From the Washington Post:
Ed Gillespie is one of the heroes of the 2010 election cycle. He built American Crossroads and American Crossroads-GPS, which raised more than $60 million to help fuel Tuesday’s GOP takeover of the House, and aggressively supported Tea Party-backed Republicans in tight Senate races ($7.3 million to support Ken Buck in Colorado, $3.9 million to support Marco Rubio in Florida, $3.1 million to support Rand Paul in Kentucky, $5 million to support Sharron Angle in Nevada, and $1.3 million to support Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania). And the Republican State Leadership Committee Gillespie established was integral to the GOP’s historic 682-seat gain in state legislatures across the country that secured Republican control of 19 chambers and counting.
So it was unfortunate to see Sarah Palin (whom I greatly admire) criticize Ed this morning as “out of touch” because he said in a Fox News interview on Election Day that a new GOP House would “try to repeal those parts of the health-care reform bill, the Obamacare, that have caused premiums to go up and have shifted people out of their insurance they like into a public plan.” On his website, David Frum stoked the fire, declaring that “Gillespie has been warning against trying to repeal the Democratic health reform outright” and said this was a sign that after having “refrained from direct confrontation with Tea Party radicalism” Gillespie “may be getting ready to rumble.”
All of this is dead wrong.

Election Day 2010 proved to be an even bigger “wave” election at the state level than anticipated. Voters overwhelmingly repudiated liberal policies at all levels, sweeping Democrats from office. As a result, Republicans will take control of dozens of statewide, constitutional offices and switch at least 19 legislative bodies to Republican control.

California Races Coming Down to the Wire
Last Updated on Monday, 1 November 2010 01:32 Written by rslcpol Monday, 1 November 2010 01:32
SACRAMENTO – Tuesday’s election for attorney general is a tossup, with Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Steve Cooley virtually tied as Harris gains ground in vote-rich Los Angeles County and among women, according to the latest Field Poll.
In the lieutenant governor’s contest, Democrat Gavin Newsom has a narrow lead over Republican Abel Maldonado, today’s poll of likely voters found.
Since July, Harris, the San Francisco district attorney, has inched closer to Cooley, the district attorney in Los Angeles. Today’s poll shows Cooley with 39 percent and Harris with 38 percent among likely voters. Almost a quarter of likely voters remain undecided.
“It’s kind of following the same pattern that we’ve seen in the top-of-ticket races: Because there are more Democrats than Republicans, that benefits Harris,” poll director Mark DiCamillo said.

L.A. County a Major Hurdle for Democrat AG Candidate
Last Updated on Friday, 29 October 2010 01:57 Written by rslcpol Friday, 29 October 2010 01:57
From the LA Times:
Voter-rich Los Angeles County represents a sure-fire victory for most Democrats on Tuesday’s ballot, but it’s anything but assured for Harris. Her GOP rival, Steve Cooley, has won three consecutive elections as the county’s district attorney despite Democrats outnumbering Republicans 2 to 1 in the county — and, a recent poll shows, he has the edge this time too.
“If Kamala Harris loses L.A. County, she won’t win,” said Allan Hoffenblum, whose California Target Book handicaps California political races. “L.A. County is to the Democratic candidates what the Central Valley and Inland Empire are to Republican candidates. You have to be strong where your party is strong.”
Harris has been a frequent flier to Los Angeles for more than a year, and in the primary beat former Los Angeles City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo by 10 percentage points in his own county. She’s stuck to a well-worn path of Democratic success: focusing on African Americans, Latinos and women, as well as reaching out to young voters who were lured to the polls by Obama’s presidential run.
