‘Fur is Flying’ in Democrat Attorney General Race

From The New York Daily News:

He’s also got a statewide robocall going out with the same audio as the video.

The robocall, in turn, produced this statement from RWDSU’s Stu Appelbaum, a Rice supporter: “I am offended by the many robocall attacks coming from the Schneiderman campaign. He is doing a disservice to New York voters and especially New York Democrats. Remember, both Hillary Clinton and Kathleen Rice were once Republicans who became committed Democrats. We need more people to do the same. Doesn’t the Albany legislator understand that? He shouldn’t be criticizing women like Kathleen for becoming Democrats. And frankly, I’d put Hillary Clinton and Kathleen Rice’s commitments to the Democratic Party up against State Senator Schneiderman’s any day.”

Rice, who according to Siena is tied with Schneiderman at 24% support among women despite being the only female in the five-way primary, have both rushed to rally female supporters.

Did Meeting with FBI get Staffers of Democrat Secretary of State Fired?

From NewsWest9.com:

Two employees in the New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office who were put on administrative leave last month reportedly have been fired.

Former office spokesman James Flores and ex-office manager Manuel Vildasol claim they were terminated in retaliation for meeting with the FBI over allegations of criminal wrongdoing in the Secretary of State’s Office.

But Deputy Secretary of State Francisco Trujillo tells KOB-TV that Flores and Vildasol were fired for allegedly secretly recording employees and creating a “hostile work environment.”

Current and former employees of Secretary of State Mary Herrera have leveled allegations ranging from possible kickbacks on contracts to office employees campaigning for Herrera on state time.

Editorial: Where Did Democrat Secretary of State Herrera’s Campaign Vows Go?

From ABQjournal.com:

Their allegations are made all the more disappointing given that Secretary of State Mary Herrera campaigned for her office on a platform of cleaning it up and institutionalizing accountability and transparency in the wake of her predecessor, Rebecca Vigil-Giron. Vigil-Giron is charged in a 50-count indictment focusing on more than $6 million in federal voter education funds.

Vigil-Giron has routinely cited politics as the fuel behind the incendiary allegations against her.

That gives her something in common with Madame Secretary, as Herrera likes to be called. She also claims to be the victim of politics.

Rather than show New Mexicans how well her office is run and how responsive it is, Herrera has spent her tenure making excuses, making a flight to India, and making a scene, stomping off after placing the two remaining complainers on leave and dismissing “blatantly false and ridiculous claims being thrown at the press like red meat in an election year.”

It’s for investigators and perhaps the courts to decide whether there is another round of potentially illegal activity involving the office.

Texas GOP Questions Democrat Leaders Residency

From Dallas Morning News:

State Republican Chairman Steve Munisteri says House Democratic leader Jim Dunnam “has actively deceived the voters” of Central Texas about where he lives. State GOP spokesman Bryan Preston goes further, saying Dunnam “has made himself ineligible” by living outside his district for the past eight years.

Dunnam, though, says Republicans are beating a dead horse. He says although he maintains two houses — to keep kids in schools he says the GOP tried to rip his family from, in a remap after the 2000 census — he has been and still is a legal candidate. And he insists he’s more than happy to take the matter to the voters on Nov. 2.

Munisteri raised it at a press conference today in Waco. He insisted that Dunnam doesn’t live in District 57, the district he’s represented since 1996, but in the adjoining district of Rep. Doc Anderson, R-Waco, or District 56. The latter lies entirely within McLennan County. Since the 2001 redistricting, Dunnam’s District 57 has rambled from part of Waco across three other rural counties to Madisonville.

AR: Democrat House Speaker Says he Can’t be Taxed for State SUV use

From ArkansasBusiness.com:

Arkansas House Speaker Robbie Wills is the only elected official with a state vehicle who said he’s exempt from paying income tax on the vehicle’s use, according to a newspaper report.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported Monday (sub. req’d) that Wills, D-Conway, said his business use of his state-owned Chevrolet Tahoe is not a taxable benefit.

“I have not used the state vehicle for personal use,” Wills said. “I’ve used the vehicle for travel to and from meetings and other events when attending in my official capacity as speaker. I have my own vehicle for personal use.”

Other elected officials have said they’ll start paying taxes on their use of state vehicles after the newspaper questioned whether the benefit was tax-free. Lt. Gov. Bill Halter said he’s paid taxes for use of his state vehicle since he took office in 2007, while Attorney General Dustin McDaniel turned in his state vehicle and reimbursed the state about $2,900 f or his past use.

Democrat Secretary of State seeks email records of her Critics

From SantaFeNewMexican.com:

Secretary of State Mary Herrera apparently likes to know what people are saying about her, especially when she knows a controversial news story about her office is in the works.

So early this month, while an Albuquerque television station was working on a story about how a computer virus infected her laptop with links to pornographic websites, Herrera did what a reporter might do — file a public information request for documents under the state Inspection of Public Record Act.

Reporters who have had a difficult time getting timely responses from the Secretary of State’s Office for public records requests are surely rolling their eyes by now.

The target of the Aug. 2 request, obtained by The New Mexican, was Sheryl Nichols, chief deputy clerk of Los Alamos. Nichols is president of the state association for county clerks and has been quoted in this publication and other news media over the years making critical remarks about Herrera’s performance.

Herrera requested copies of all of Nichols’ e-mail correspondence from July 12 through July 16 from the County Clerk’s Office to and from a list of several people, many of whom have been critical of Herrera. And several were employees of Herrera’s own office.

NH: Democrat Candidate is Arrested, Quits School Board, Still in Race

From Concord Monitor:

Carlos Cardona, a Franklin activist and Democratic candidate for state representative, resigned from the school board Monday after the police said he threatened to kill his partner with a knife.

Cardona, 21, was involved in a domestic dispute about 1 p.m. July 18 at the couple’s 42 School St. apartment, court records show. The police said Cardona held a knife in his partner’s direction while threatening to kill him. He also slammed a door, striking his partner in the arm, court records show.

The police arrested Cardona for criminal threatening, a felony, and simple assault, a misdemeanor.

In an interview yesterday, Cardona denied the charges and said he plans to take back his resignation. He said local Republicans, led by Franklin School Board Chairwoman Kathleen Russo, pressured him into resigning in haste Monday.

MI: Democrats Cybersquat in AG Race

From wlns.com:

For years, Bill Schuette (SHOO’-tee) has used the slogan “Schuette on Duty” to campaign for Congress, the state Senate, the Michigan Court of Appeals, and attorney general.

Now, the Midland Republican has lost the website http://www.schuetteonduty.com to the Michigan Democratic Party, which also bought right to use the name with other extensions. Democrats plan to use the site to criticize Schuette.

Schuette campaign manager Rusty Hills brushes off the move, saying he’s sure voters will find Schuette’s official site http://www.billschuette.com.

Florida Democrat AG Candidates Reverse Course as they Attack Each other

From tampabay.com:

Democrats Dave Aronberg and Dan Gelber fought against big money in politics as lawmakers but as the two battle in an increasingly negative primary election for attorney general, they are reversing course.

A political committee tied to Aronberg is accepting dozens of unlimited checks — including 21 for $5,000 or more — from lobbyists and special interests to fuel television commercials attacking Gelbert for his former law firm’s ties to BP.

It’s exactly what Aronberg, a state senator from Greenacres, fought to prohibit when he sponsored legislation this year to put a $500 limit on contributions to political committees.

Likewise, Gelber created a political committee in July and took big-dollar contributions from trial lawyers and special interests to pay for a mailer tarring Aronberg for his negative attacks and Republican-leaning votes on legislation.
