NY: Disgraced ex-Governor Spitzer Thinks Current Governor is doing Great Job
Last Updated on Friday, 13 November 2009 02:05 Written by rslcpol Friday, 13 November 2009 02:05
From New York Daily News:
Gov. Paterson may not have the President’s backing, but he got a ringing endorsement Thursday from hooker-happy Eliot Spitzer – the man who got him into this mess in the first place.
“David is a friend. He is somebody I support,” the disgraced former governor said at Harvard University’s Safra ethics center.
“All Democrats in the state should support him,” Spitzer told the Daily News after delivering a lecture on big business corruption.
“He is making tough decisions on the budget and the welter of issues that need to be confronted in a moment of economic crisis, and he is doing so thoughtfully.”

NY: Democrat Senators Rebuff Dem Governor
Last Updated on Friday, 6 November 2009 01:56 Written by rslcpol Friday, 6 November 2009 01:56
From The Buffalo News:
Reducing the state’s soaring deficit, legalizing gay marriage, slowing property tax growth and toughening drunk driving laws are among the items on the agenda for a special session of the Legislature that Gov. David A. Paterson has scheduled for Tuesday.
The governor, though, is being rebuffed by his fellow Democrats who run the State Senate in his quest to address both houses a day earlier in a rare joint session in which he hopes to convince them of the need to cut state spending to trim the $3.2 billion deficit.
But Democrats in the Senate, where Paterson served for years before becoming governor, have rejected that notion. Senate Republicans plan to attend the Monday session, as do Assembly Democrats and Republicans.

KY: Dem Lt. Governor Accuses Dem Attorney General for Secret Tapes
Last Updated on Tuesday, 20 October 2009 01:41 Written by rslcpol Tuesday, 20 October 2009 01:41
From Kentucky.com:
Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo’s campaign for U.S. Senate is accusing Democratic rival Jack Conway’s aides of helping to produce controversial anonymous recordings of Mongiardo.
Mongiardo campaign spokesman Kim Geveden said Monday that Conway’s campaign is “neck deep in political dirty tricks.”
“Conway’s campaign either produced the political attack video that was posted anonymously to a YouTube page on Oct. 7 or it was directly or indirectly involved in its production,” Geveden said Monday.

Court Reverses Democrat SoS Brunner’s Decision on Republicans Residency
Last Updated on Wednesday, 7 October 2009 08:20 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 7 October 2009 08:20
From Dayton Business Journal:
The dispute had taken on political significance as Husted is running for the GOP slot in the secretary of state race next year. Brunner isn’t going for another term as she seeks the U.S. Senate seat to be vacated by Republican George Voinovich.
The Supreme Court writ was joined by all seven justices, although Justice Paul Pfeifer concurred in judgment only and entered a separate opinion.
In reversing Brunner’s decision, the court wrote that the Montgomery County elections board didn’t follow procedure in moving to cancel Husted’s registration and also disagreed with Brunner on the role the residency of Husted’s family played in her decision.

ACORN Plot in Oklahoma?
Last Updated on Wednesday, 30 September 2009 11:59 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 30 September 2009 11:59
From NewsOK.com:
A Republican state legislator released documents Tuesday which he says show the community-organizing group ACORN focused on helping Democrats in three legislative races in the November 2008 election and had developed a game plan to “take power” in Oklahoma within five years.
The documents, which include legislative district maps and various forms, were recovered from computers abandoned by ACORN workers in Oklahoma City, said Rep. Mike Reynolds, R-Oklahoma City. Also found was a script apparently used in Houston to go door-to-door to encourage voters to vote for Barack Obama in November 2008.
“They say they’re not political, but one of the subdirectories was called political action plans,” Reynolds said. “It was their political plans to take over key targeted races in Oklahoma City to show how powerful they are.”

Trial Lawyer Lobby Admits to Racially Tinged Flier
Last Updated on Friday, 25 September 2009 10:28 Written by rslcpol Friday, 25 September 2009 10:28
From the Miami Herald:
In a highly embarrassing mea culpa, Florida’s powerful trial lawyer lobby admitted Wednesday that it was behind an ugly race-baiting flier in a recent North Florida Senate election.
“Morally and politically, it was indefensible,” said Scott Carruthers, executive director of the Florida Justice Association, the trial-bar group, who said its leaders had no knowledge of it. “I accept full responsibility for not having done everything to stop that piece from going out.”
The flier juxtaposed images of the Black Panthers, President Barack Obama, the Rev. Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam and black marchers holding an ACORN banner. The caption read: “Is this the change YOU want to believe in? Violence and intimidation at the voting booth.”

Ohio Democrat Secretary of State’s Decision Should Make Her Blush
Last Updated on Friday, 25 September 2009 10:26 Written by rslcpol Friday, 25 September 2009 10:26
From Cleveland.com:
It’s not news that Ohio election law operates on a partisan basis, with county boards of election evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats and a partisan, elected secretary of state holding the uncomfortable role of tie-breaker.
But Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner’s ruling this week that Republican State Sen. Jon Husted does not reside in the Dayton-area district he represents is more than that. It’s a perfect storm of political partisanship masquerading as governance.
It’s also, of course, a complete coincidence that Brunner’s ruling could be used to embarrass Husted, who wants to succeed her as Ohio’s next secretary of state. (Brunner is running for the U.S. Senate.)
Brunner’s ruling breaks an equally partisan elections board deadlock in Montgomery County.

NY: State Senator Pulls Bleeding Companion through Lobby – Caught on Tape
Last Updated on Wednesday, 23 September 2009 12:28 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 23 September 2009 12:28
From NY Times:
State Senator Hiram Monserrate pulled his bleeding companion through the lobby of their Queens building so violently last December that she dropped a towel she had pressed to her sliced face, a video played on Tuesday in court showed.
The fleeting and grainy security-camera images — crucial evidence for the prosecution in the senator’s domestic violence trial, and never before made public — show Mr. Monserrate, 42, yanking the distressed woman, Karla Giraldo, 30, as she lunges to ring a neighbor’s bell and tries to grab a banister rail and door frame.

TX: Democrat Gets Slapped with Fines because of Campaign Finance Report
Last Updated on Wednesday, 16 September 2009 11:56 Written by rslcpol Wednesday, 16 September 2009 11:56
From MySANews:
The Texas Ethics Commission has slapped Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon, D-San Antonio, with a $3,100 fine after validating multiple errors in the veteran lawmaker’s campaign finance reports.
The commission determined that the violations were neither technical nor minimal.
A couple of violations involved improper reimbursements, such as giving checks to colleagues — Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, and Rep. Ryan Guillen, D-Rio Grande City — to cover her share of gifts the lawmakers presented to committee chairmen. Those payments should have been made directly to the store or company from which the gifts were bought.
