NH: Dem House Speaker Won’t Ask Democrat to Step Down

From Concord Monitor:

House Speaker Terie Norelli will not ask state Rep. Dan Eaton to step down from his leadership position because of a continuing investigation by the attorney general’s office.

“Neither you nor I have any evidence that Representative Eaton has in fact engaged in any wrongdoing,” Norelli, a Portsmouth Democrat, wrote in a letter to House Republican Leader Sherman Packard of Londonderry. “Until such time as the Attorney General’s investigation is concluded and its report issued, it would be premature to take any action.”

The Telegraph reported last week on an investigation by the attorney general’s office into a liquor commission enforcement action at the Railroad Tavern in Keene. Liquor commission enforcement chief Eddie Edwards told the Union Leader that Eaton, a Stoddard Democrat and the majority floor leader, may have tried to influence the investigation.

SPECIAL ELECTION VICTORIES IN NH, AL FOR REPUBLICANS

– ALABAMA WIN A PICKUP FOR REPUBLICANS –

ALEXANDRIA, VA – David Boutin of New Hampshire (16th Senate District) and K.L. Brown of Alabama (40th House District) continue the trend of Republican wins in special elections with their victories tonight. Republicans have now won 47 state legislative special elections across the country since November 2008 – gaining 11 seats previously held by Democrats during this time. Boutin and Brown both ran as conservative Republicans dedicated to lower taxes, less spending, and smaller government. The Republican State Leadership Committee, the nation’s largest caucus of Republican state leaders, applauded Boutin and Brown for their well-run campaigns focusing on commonsense, conservative solutions.

“Tonight’s wins are a continuation of the momentum for Republican candidates and the commonsense, conservative solutions they bring to state legislatures across the country,” said Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) President Scott Ward. “We are thrilled to have David Boutin and K.L. Brown join the ranks of Republicans fighting for limited government and smaller taxes in their states. On the heels of Republican gains made in the New York Assembly last week, leaders of both parties are surely taking notice.”

NH: Special Election Heats Up

From the NashuaTelegraph.com:

But this special election, like all others before it, is all about turnout. Republicans are energized, Democrats less so and most independents could care less unless about this race unless they have an affinity for one or both men.

By one measure, it’s the seventh most Republican district in the 24-person state Senate.

What makes this seat more difficult is there is no single media market.

There are three Manchester wards in the district, but there are more votes coming from the outlying towns, including Candia and Hooksett, as well as Concord suburbs Bow and Dunbarton. The district even spans three counties.

New Hampshire Republicans Unite Against Health Bill

From the Concord Monitor:

State Republican leaders and candidates joined together yesterday to oppose the Democratic-sponsored health care reform bill.

The Republicans accused Democrats of backroom dealing and focused particularly on a deal with Nebraska Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson that would have the federal government paying the cost of expanding Medicaid only in Nebraska.

“The cornhusker deal that discriminates against New Hampshire and other states and treats one state better than another has to stop,” said Kelly Ayotte, former state attorney general and now a U.S. Senate candidate.
