KS: New Poll Shows Republican Sweep in November

From wibw.com:

If a new poll is right, Republicans could be lining up to sweep the statewide offices in the November elections.

Survey USA released the numbers Wednesday from a poll sponsored by KWCH-TV in Wichita.

In the Kansas Governor’s race, 59-percent of those surveyed said, if the election were today, they’d vote for the Republican ticket of Sam Brownback and Jeff Colyer, while 32-percent chose Democrats Tom Holland and Kelly Kultala. Seven percent of those polled went with third-party candidates, while two percent were undecided.

In the Secretary of State’s race, Republican Kris Kobach took a 53- to 36-percent lead over the man who currently holds the office, Democrat Chris Biggs.

The Attorney General’s race is a bit tighter. Republican Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt leads current AG Democrat Steve Six 50- to 41- percent.

KS: Former Governor Backs Republican AG Candidate

From wibw.com:

The Republican candidate in the attorney general’s race has earned the backing of a former governor.

Bill Graves announced Wednesday his endorsement of Senate Majority Derek Schmidt for the AG’s post.

Schmidt served as general counsel during Graves’ second term. Graves was Kansas governor from 1995 to 2003. He now heads up the National Trucking Association.

“Derek Schmidt served my office well as legal counsel,” Graves said. “From reviewing pardon applications to crafting executive orders, I relied on Derek’s advice and counsel to carry out my duties as governor. He will make a superb attorney general for Kansas, and it is with great pleasure that I give him my full and unqualified support and encourage Kansans to get out and vote for him.”

The Plight of Kansas Democrats

From the Marysville Advocate:

The future of the Kansas Democratic Party may be riding with the fortunes of Attorney General Stephen Six, Secretary of State Chris Biggs and State Treasurer Dennis McKinney.

Each are unelected incumbents who were appointed by Democratic governors to fill out the unexpired terms of their predecessors who resigned. The three have fulfilled their duties admirably since taking office, but toil in relative obscurity because these offices do not generally command front-page coverage. Moreover, each is trying to win despite stiff political crosswinds that will make victory difficult.

Much of these Kansas Democrats’ campaign hopes rest on factors largely outside of their control. With the economic recovery stalled and the presidency and Congress controlled by Democrats, Democratic incumbents all over the country are in serious jeopardy.

KS: Republicans Pick Law Professor Kris Kobach as Secretary of State Candidate

From the Wichita Eagle:

Kansas voters’ frustration with illegal immigration gave law professor Kris Kobach the Republican nomination for Kansas secretary of state in Tuesday night’s primary.

Kobach, a former state GOP chairman who helped write Arizona’s new law on illegal immigration, had nearly 53 percent of the vote with 79 percent of the state’s precincts reporting on a three-way race. Kobach has linked attacking illegal immigration to combating voter fraud.

He’ll face incumbent Democrat Chris Biggs of Junction City in the November general election. Biggs, appointed to the job in March by Democratic Gov. Mark Parkinson, defeated state Sen. Chris Steineger of Kansas City with 60 percent of the vote.

Election Day in Michigan, Kansas, Missouri

From the WashingtonExaminer:

Voters in three states will participate in primaries today. In Michigan, the open governorship hangs in the balance, and in Kansas, Republican Sen. Sam Brownback has left his seat open to run for (really, to become) governor.

For Michigan governor, the GOP race is considered a three-way toss-up between Attorney General Mike Cox, Rep. Pete Hoekstra and businessman Rick Snyder, with Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard in the running as well. The geography favors Hoekstra — he hails from the western part of the state, where two House primaries (one is to replace Hoekstra) will help get out the vote. The other three Republican candidates are all from the eastern part of the state. The governor’s race, in which Republicans are favored, has national significance. It will be key to both congressional and state legislative redistricting after the 2010 election.
