Alabama House Republicans Unveil Agenda

From msn.com:

House Minority Leader Mike Hubbard, who’s also chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, said all Republican candidates for the Legislature are supporting the “2010 Republican Handshake with Alabama,” and its passage depends on Republicans taking control of the Legislature for the first time in 136 years.

To try to accomplish that, GOP candidates are doing more than saying what they will do. Hubbard said they are tying Alabama Democrats to Washington to capitalize on voters’ uneasiness with the national economy and dislike of some new federal policies, particularly health care.

“The Democrats in Alabama are no different than the Democrats in Washington. They have the same philosophy,” said state Sen. Del Marsh, R-Anniston. Marsh, the GOP’s state finance chairman, was one of 17 legislative candidates who joined Hubbard to unveil the legislative agenda.

Chapman called Handel “a conservative’s conservative.” Chapman said she and Handel became friends through the National Association of Secretaries of State.

RSLC State Race Spotlight: Raising the Red Tide in Alabama

Ben Cannatti, RSLC Political Director co-authors the second piece in the series “RSLC State Race Spotlight” on Townhall.com:

From Townhall.com:

If you’re not from Alabama, it might surprise you to know that Democrats control both branches of the state legislature – currently by a margin of 5 seats in the senate and 15 seats in the larger house chamber. If you’re a Republican from Alabama, it probably infuriates you that the Democrats have held a majority in both houses since Ulysses S. Grant was President.

The Alabama Republican Party is pushing hard to make 2010 the year that the tide turns in the Alabama State House (we’ll leave it to Coach Saban to direct the Tide on the gridiron). Coordinating under the theme of “Campaign 2010 – Securing Alabama’s Future ,” the state GOP is targeting the lack of transparency and endemic corruption that is strangling the legislature after 136 years of Democratic control. For years, state Democrats have benefited from big war chests funded in part by union supporters. The Republican’s Campaign 2010 project is a concerted multi-million dollar effort to recruit, staff and support enough quality Republican candidates across the state to finally overcome the Democrats’ money wall.

AL: Runoff Turnout almost equals primary

From montgomeryadvertiser.com:

The turnout for the Republican runoff was nearly as good as the GOP primary June 1, but the Democratic turnout fell considerably with only one statewide race on the ballot.

The turnout traditionally declines from the primary to the runoff because there are fewer races to draw voters.

The GOP primary June 1 drew 492,897 voters, while unofficial returns for the runoff Tuesday show 465,281 people voted for governor.

Recount Set in Alabama

From alabama.raycompolitics.com:

Secretary of State Beth Chapman put it this way in an email to GOP chairman Mike Hubbard and the James and Bentley campaigns over the weekend:

“Mr. Tim James petitioned for a recount. The Republican Party chairman agreed to a recount, the Attorney General agreed to a recount, I have agreed to a recount…. A recount for Mr. James is the one thing that everyone has agreed to.”

Today, Attorney General Troy King complains of “misinformation” concerning his advisory opinion.

Alabama: Mike Hubbard – Republicans Poised for November Victories

From oanow.com:

The Alabama Republican Party just completed a primary campaign cycle that, I believe, leaves us perfectly poised for victory against Democrats in the fall. An emerging field of impressive legislative candidates, an exciting gubernatorial run-off that will keep conservative Republican principles and ideas in the headlines and a Democratic nominee for governor who campaigned with convicted felons and expressed strong vocal support for Obamacare are all positive signs for the ALGOP.

Evidence of a Republican surge became clear when total turnout figures reveal that 61 percent of primary voters participated in the GOP election as opposed to 39 percent who cast Democratic ballots — a difference of almost 173,000 votes. Just as the success and popularity of sports teams can be judged by attendance at their games, so, too, can the viability of political parties be judged by turnout in statewide primary elections.

AL: Pay Raise Vote Cited for Incumbents Defeat

From MontgomeryAdvertiser:

A vote Alabama legislators cast more than three years ago to raise their pay by 61 percent is being viewed as a cause for the defeat of several incumbents in Tuesday’s party primaries.

Political observers say more lawmakers could lose their jobs in the November general election because of the vote, taken in 2007.

“I can’t believe any challenger will waste the chance to point out that the incumbent voted for a pay raise for himself,” said retired University of Alabama political scientist William Stewart.

Four-term Republican state Rep. Mac Gipson of Prattville said Thursday he has no doubt that voting for the pay hike was a reason why he lost to Prattville attorney Paul Beckman by 60 percent to 40 percent.
